STEM Magnet Info
William Byrne Elementary opened as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Magnet School in September 2009. It is a STEM Magnet School for all students in kindergarten through grade five.
The goal of the William Byrne Elementary staff is to provide a foundation for students to become problem-solvers, innovators, and inventors who are self-reliant and able to think logically.
WHAT IS STEM?
STEM education is an approach to teaching that integrates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics not only with each other but infuses central concepts from those four disciplines — inquiry, research, design, problem-solving, collaboration — from those four disciplines into all subject areas. More than in a typical school, students use technology for research, data collection, data organization, and to present findings. Engineering concepts and activities will be are offered at each grade level.
HOW IS INSTRUCTION DELIVERED AT A STEM SCHOOL?
Inquiry-based learning is at the heart of the STEM approach: it is active, student-centered education. Through it, students generate questions and identify steps to answer those questions. The teacher acts as a coach both to facilitate students' refinement of their own questions and to guide them through the research, recording and reporting processes. In collaborative groups, students frequently test several potential answers before finding one that works. This trial-and-error approach increases their problem-solving skills, persistence, creativity and self-esteem.
Students in a STEM school are challenged to use inquiry-based learning methods to make observations, devise and pursue research questions, record data, and find solutions. In addition, students and teachers use technology for research and design, and as avenues to apply what they have learned. Students have equipment and space to conduct experiments and use multiple methods of recording their observations and data, such as a scientific notebook. Community members who work in STEM-related fields will be brought in as experts and students will participate in STEM-related field trips.
