No. One91 Virtual Academy is a free, public school just like any other District 191 school.

Yes. Current District 191 students can enroll in One91 Virtual Academy by filling out the Variance Form application.

Students who are new to District 191 - either as new kindergarten students, newly moved into the district, or who live outside District 191 - can enroll online or by visiting our Enrollment Center in person at Diamondhead Education Center, 200 W. No. One91 Virtual Academy will be a permanent online school option available to anyone in Minnesota in grades K-12.

A student is always guaranteed placement in their school of attendance (“home school”). If online learning isn’t working well for a student or a family's situation changes, families should contact the One91 Virtual Academy administrator to work through the student’s needs and find the best situation. Changing from Virtual Academy to one of the other District 191 schools - especially at the high school and middle school levels - is very disruptive within a semester because it is like transferring schools. So switching within a semester will be limited and discouraged.

No. One91 Virtual Academy will be its own school. Students will still be able to participate in activities, clubs and athletics that are offered at the brick and mortar schools, though Virtual Academy may eventually have some clubs and activities of its own. 

High school Virtual Academy students can take one in-person elective at BHS per semester.

One91 Virtual Academy will be available to students throughout Minnesota, but once a student enrolls in One91 Virtual Academy, they are a District 191 student.

The amount of synchronous online instruction students receive will vary by level, with more asynchronous/independent time as students get older.

At the elementary level, students will have up to 120 minutes of live online learning (synchronous) time per day, including Morning Meeting and some combination of instruction in literacy, math, specialists, and WIN (“What I Need”). There will be independent work time for reading time, math practice, and other topics.

Teachers have office hours for additional time.

In middle school, 6th grade students will have up to 2 hours of live online (synchronous) academic time as scheduled by their teacher, and 7th and 8th grade students will have up to 1 hour per day. This time will primarily be to provide support to students in an individual and/or small group setting for any needs they might have, including for students with an IEP, EL needs, or other class-specific needs. In addition, there will be a required synchronous advisory 3 times per week (M-W-F) for 30 min, and teachers have office hours.

At the high school level, classes will be close to 100% asynchronous with students having the freedom to complete things on their own time.  Some courses will have some live online (synchronous) activities based on the teacher, subject area, and or student needs. Those individual situations will be communicated by the teacher. 

At the elementary and middle school levels, students will be full-time students in One91 Virtual Academy. But they will still be welcome to participate in after-school activities and athletics as part of their local school program. 

At the high school level, students will have several options for enrollment, including the opportunity to take some individual classes through One91 Virtual Academy while attending school in-person the rest of the time. This is called “VA Supplemental.” 

Even students who attend Virtual Academy full time will have the opportunity to take one class at a time in-person at Burnsville High School. There are three different enrollment options for high school students and how their class loads might work under each option. Note that Virtual Academy classes will be quarter-long classes, rather than semester long as they are at BHS.

Yes! One91 Virtual Academy students are District 191 students and can participate on any teams, clubs or organizations offered.

Yes, students will receive needed materials like textbooks, art supplies, novels, and other materials. For students that live in the area, they will pick up items once per quarter.  For students who don’t live in the area, items will be shipped

All One91 Virtual Academy teachers will be District 191 teachers.

Students will receive a personal learning device for their use. Learn more about student devices. 

Meals provided as part of the school food service program are only served at schools, as required by federal law. Because of that, students who enroll in One91 Virtual Academy who qualify for free- or reduced-price meals would only be able to receive and consume those meals at a school site.

During the 2020-21 school year, an exception to this rule was made because of the pandemic and meals have been served at pick-up locations. If that exception is continued, District 191 may continue to serve curbside pickup meals. 

Families are still encouraged to complete a Educational Benefits Application. This does two things: it helps ensure our schools, including One91 Virtual Academy, receive all the funding they need, and it can provide additional benefits for students, such as free or reduced fees for participating in athletics and activities. 

What’s new for the 2022-2023 School Year

Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) is a temporary food benefit that provides extra support to
Minnesota families with children who are approved for free or reduced-price school meals when the
COVID-19 pandemic impacts school operations. P-EBT also provides benefits to families with children
age 5 and younger who are enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP),
Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP) or Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (Tribal
TANF).
