Well-written essays have earned prizes for three District 191 middle school students.

The eighth-grade students entered the Patriot's Pen essay contest, sponsored by Burnsville VFW Post 5833. Members of the Post evaluated the entries and selected the winners, said Howard Lundin, commander of the Post.

Earning monetary awards for their essays were:

1st place - Ikram Belqas ($100) (Eagle Ridge)
2nd place - Dixie Lytle ($75) (Nicollet)
3rd place - Joseph Ong ($50) (Eagle Ridge)

Mike Blair, language arts teacher at both Eagle Ridge and Nicollet middle schools, introduced the essay contest to students by covering the theme and intended audience. They reviewed the rules and parameters of the essay and how best to introduce, support and summarize their thoughts within those parameters.

Blair also received a Teacher of the Year Recognition from the VFW and a monetary award of $100.
