District 191 annual chess tournament goes virtual this year

With District 191 athletics and activities set at safety dial zero, following Gov. Walz’s “dial back” announcement on Nov. 18, our 35th annual district chess tournament will go virtual on Saturday, Dec. 12!

District 191 students in grades K-12 are invited to compete in this year’s virtual competition. There will be five rounds held approximately at 9:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 11:50 a.m., 12:55 p.m. and 2:05 p.m. There will be an awards ceremony at 3:15 p.m., when team and individual awards will be announced.

Chess is an important part of the culture in District 191. Every year, all fourth-grade students participate in a residency with a chess master, and most schools in the district have a chess team.

Individuals interested in participating in the tournament should complete the registration form below and send it to Brian Ribnick. Deadline for postmarking registration is Dec. 8.
