Voters in Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 approved a levy referendum on Nov. 5 that will provide about $1.7 million per year in new funding for the district’s schools.
“The support from our community is inspiring and essential,” said Superintendent Dr. Theresa Battle. “We are in a time of transformation for District 191. I know we will grow stronger and better for our students, and it means everything to know that we’re doing it in partnership with our community.”
The single ballot question was approved with 61% of the vote. It provides levy authority for up to $1,900 per pupil or the state maximum, whichever is less. The authorization will ensure the district continues to receive maximum funding and avoid more operating levy elections for the next 10 years.
The increase in funding will help close a $5.5 million budget gap projected for the 2020-21 school year. It represents one part of District 191’s “Integrated Action Plan” to put the district on solid financial footing, which also includes realigning facilities to match current enrollment, priority-based budgeting, seeking alternate funding including grants, and ongoing improvements to educational programming.
"We are incredibly grateful for the trust voters have placed in us and the vocal support from so many in the One91 community,” said Board Chair Abigail Alt.
Results are unofficial until canvassed by members of the District 191 Board of Education at their next regular meeting on Thursday, Nov. 14. More information is available at www.isd191.org/referendum.
