The Metcalf Middle School Chess Team participated in the National Middle School Chess Championships in Atlanta, GA, April 6-8. Seventeen members attended along with two players from William Byrne Elementary.
The students brought home lots of hardware:
- Gavin Kellen placed third in the 1400 class category - Open Section.
- Ava Piccolino placed 13th, Mitchell Kellen (Byrne student) finished 17th, and Kendrick Johnson placed 20th in the Under 1000 section.
- Audra Johnson placed 6th, Zoe Olson placed 7th, JJ Johnson took the 30th place trophy and Joseph Santos took the tied for 30th in the U 750 section.
In the team competition, Metcalf's under 1000 team placed 5th overall and the U 750 section placed 2nd.
“The team winners in those two sections have had their status challenged and there is a challenge that has been made to their titles,” said Brian Ribnick, who coaches the Metcalf team along with Mike Fellman. “Based on the evidence, there is a good chance Metcalf will be declared national champions in the U750 section once the dust settles. If so, it would be their 20th national title.”
The William Byrne team is coached by Stan Kegel and Jason Kellen.
