District 191’s new middle school quiz bowl teams off to good start

Quiz Bowl teams are new this year at the three middle schools in Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 and recently teams from Metcalf and Nicollet middle schools competed at the EMERALD (Edgewood Middle Entirely Raucous Academic Learning Decathlon) tournament hosted by Edgewood Middle School in Mounds View.

“We had an excellent showing and I'm exceptionally proud of our participants,” said Coach Les Moffitt. “I love watching our students compete against and defeat other schools!”

There were 22 teams in the tournament, mostly from private schools. Metcalf Middle School finished 7-3 and earned fourth place.

“In three total tournaments this year, Metcalf has placed 5th out of 28, 4th out of 55 and 4th out of 22 — very impressive!” said Moffitt.

With only three members – Joe Schatz, Luke Trussell and Nate Trussell – the Metcalf team competed one student short of a full team. Their most impressive victory came over Nativity of Our Lord C, 610 to 10, according to Moffitt. Joe finished as the tournament's second overall scorer and earned a trophy. He scored more than 100 points per match, meaning he answered at least 10 of the 24 questions each round. Nate finished 17th and Luke finished 66th out of 95 total students.

Nicollet finished 2-5 and in a tie for ninth place, the team’s best results of the season in terms of both wins and placement. They were the 8th highest scoring team in the tournament. Nicollet fielded a team of five seventh graders: Calvin Hume, Keegan McDevitt, Alex Stanek, Davin Alt and Carter Stuart. Nicollet won its first two games, and their most impressive victory was against St. Croix Prep B, 365 to negative 20. Carter finished as the 26th overall scorer. Keegan was 29th, while Davin was 39th, Alex was 54th and Calvin was 60th.

The next middle school Quiz Bowl tournament is March 11 at De La Salle High School.

Meanwhile, Burnsville High School secured its second South Suburban Conference Quiz Bowl Championship on Feb. 23. The school’s Quiz Bowl A Team competed against Apple Valley, Eagan, Eastview, Prior Lake, Rosemount and Shakopee. The A team went 6-0, defeating Eagan A for its second straight undefeated title.
