Diamondhead Clinic celebrates 10 years serving families

On Jan. 6, friends and supporters of Diamondhead Clinic gathered to celebrate 10 years of serving families and to dedicate a painting inspired by a former patient and Burnsville High School graduate.

The clinic, which is located in District 191’s Diamondhead Education Center, began offering free care for children in 2006. It’s supported by funding from the Park Nicollet Foundation.

At the Foundation’s fund-raising gala in October, BHS alumna America shared her story of how the clinic helped her family find the care it needed so they could pursue a better future. America is now a student at Normandale Community College and planning to study nursing.

Inspired by her story, artist Jimmy Longoria created a painting at the gala called “America” to be part of the Foundation’s auction. Dr. Shannon Neale, similarly inspired, placed the winning bid on the painting and then donated it to Diamondhead Clinic, where it was dedicated as part of the clinic’s 10th anniversary celebration in memory of Dr. Neale’s late husband, Dr. Bill Richards.

“It makes me so proud to be associated with this wonderful community resource,” said Dawn Willson, the director of health services for District 191. “We are so extremely fortunate  to have the Diamondhead Clinic available for our families and students.”

Along with Diamondhead Clinic, Longoria’s work also hangs in the permanent collection of Chicago’s National Museum of Mexican Art. He is a Bush Foundation Fine Art Fellow and is now working on a piece for Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Diamondhead Clinic provides non-emergency medical care on a walk-in basis to children from birth through high school years. Located in the lower level of Diamondhead Education Center, 200 W. Burnsville Parkway in Burnsville, the clinic is open from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Children’s dental services are also provided. Learn more about Diamondhead Clinic at
