BHS teacher among winners of appreciation contest

Burnsville High School Language Arts teacher Jen Waller was among nine Minnesota teachers selected as winners in a teacher appreciation contest sponsored by Schuler Shoes and Rockport during Teacher Appreciation Week, Sept. 18-25.
The company accepted online nominations for local teachers who use their skills to serve and empower students through classroom and extracurricular projects that build up the educational community.
Those elected as winners received grants from Schuler Shoes. Waller will receive $500 for her project, #BurnsvilleStrong.
#BurnsvilleStrong first appeared in 2014 in response to several tragedies involving Burnsville students and recent graduates. Though the movement started out as a simple hashtag, it quickly unified the school and rallied the community to support students and encourage their well-being.
The #BurnsvilleStrong movement has expanded since its introduction and has fostered community through events, fundraisers and awareness campaigns. For example, a #BurnsvilleStrong student leadership group mentors and supports underclassmen.
