Entire school community will read same book

The same book will be read and then discussed during winter break by students, parents and staff members at Sioux Trail Elementary School in Burnsville. It’s a way to build community while developing literacy, according to Principal Shannon McParland.

“We’re calling it “Sioux Trail Reads: One School, One Book’,” she said. “We’re all reading it together and we are so excited about this event!”

Everyone will read a  “Storm of the Century” about Hurricane Katrina by Stephanie Peters between Dec. 23 to Jan. 2. It’s historical fiction with a mix of graphics and text in 56 pages.

Students can read it electronically through the school’s subscription to myOn, an online literacy system. Paper copies of the book are also available.

The school is providing questions that can be used before, during and after reading the book.

Then on Sunday, Jan. 3 from 4 to 6 p.m., an online group discussion of the book will take place.
