Ashley Vanderwoude named Athena Award winner

Senior Ashley Vanderwoude was recently named the top female athlete at Burnsville High School, winning the Athena Award. The annual award is handed out to the most outstanding female athlete in each metro area high school.

Vanderwoude, a three-year letter winner, will receive her award at the 43rd annual banquet, held at the Minneapolis Convention Center in May.

Blaze volleyball coach Kari Raymond says, "Ashley was a great student-athlete to have in our program. She is a true competitor, always bringing her best to practice and leading others to do the same. Ashley put the team above herself her senior season by changing positions to libero in order to best meet the needs of the team. She brought a great balance of intensity and encouragement to our team and led by example on and off the court."

In the spring, you can find Vanderwoude on the badminton court, where she is the team's No. 1 singles player. Badminton coach Jeff Limke adds, "Ashley is a great kid. She's one of our captains, along with Amanda Larson and Kayla Kruse. Truthfully, they work as team in captaining, and that explains how Ashley works. She is a leader, but she shares it with her co-captains."

Congratulations Ashley, and best wishes to you this season and beyond!
