AVID

District 191 secondary schools offer AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a college prep program designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four-year colleges. AVID serves all students by ensuring they acquire the organizational and study skills needed for them to be successful. Students learn academic strategies to develop critical thinking skills and ask probing questions.

AVID Goals

• Provide intensive support with in-class tutors and a strong student/teacher relationship

School-wide AVID

As a school-wide methodology, AVID equips students with strategies to prepare for greater academic rigor as they move through their school years and start thinking about college and career preparedness. The program builds five core skills: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading strategies (WICOR).

AVID Elective

Do you have a strong desire to attend college? Do you consider yourself determined and motivated? AVID might be the place for you!  

Students may apply to be part of the AVID Leadership Elective class (for students in 9th, 10th, and the fall of 11th grade).  In the AVID class, students will learn skills that will help prepare them to be successful in advanced courses in both high school and college. Students will focus on writing, critical thinking, collaboration, reading, note-taking, study skills and organization.  Twice a week, tutors will come into the AVID classroom to help answer questions that students have about difficult topics.  As part of the course, students will also explore potential careers and even visit colleges and universities!  Although AVID serves all students, it focuses on the least served students in the academic middle. Determination is a key component of the AVID program.
