Minnesota Student Survey
Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 is planning to participate in the 2022 Minnesota Student Survey (MnSS). The survey is an anonymous statewide school-based survey conducted to gain insights into the world of students and their experiences. Taken in grades 5-12, students respond to questions on school climate, bullying, out-of-school activities, health and nutrition, emotional and mental health, relationships, substance use and more. All responses are anonymous.
The survey is voluntary. Parents are able to review the survey and may choose not to have their child participate. The survey will take place on or about March 7-18. Contact your child’s school no later than March 7 if you do not want your child to participate in this activity.
The Minnesota Student Survey (MNSS) is one of the longest-running youth surveys in the nation. It is a triennial survey that began in 1989.
The MNSS is the primary source of comprehensive data on youth at the state, county and local level in Minnesota and is the only consistent source of statewide data on the health and well-being of youth from smaller population groups, such as racial or ethnic groups. It provides valuable information about issues vital to the health, safety and academic success of young people.
School districts, local public health agencies and community nonprofits use local data to plan programs and to obtain grant funding. State agencies use the results to monitor trends, to assess the extent of disparities among population groups, to obtain federal and state funding and to assist local communities and schools.
Minnesota Student Survey Instruments
Federal law requires schools to make the Minnesota Student Survey available for parents to review. District contacts have already received electronic copies of the survey instruments, and parents and others can continue to review the survey in person at the district. Alternatively, districts may send an electronic copy of the survey to anyone requesting it.
Schools that opt to survey 6th graders can either use the Level 1 or Level 2 survey. Typically, 6th graders in an elementary school take the Level 1 survey while 6th graders in a middle school or junior high take the Level 2 survey. Generally, 7th and 8th graders would take the Level 2 survey.
