Winter Weather Guidelines

ON THE FIRST "SNOW DAY" OR DAY WHEN SCHOOL IS CANCELED UNEXPECTEDLY:

There will be no regular classes for all District 191 students, including students enrolled in One91 Virtual Academy, and programs will be canceled. This includes Community Education classes, preschool programs, Project KIDS child care, and after-school activities and athletics.

ON THE 2ND & SUBSEQUENT "SNOW DAYS" OR UNEXPECTED CANCELATIONS:

All school facilities will be closed and District 191 programming, including Community Education classes, preschool programs and Project KIDS child care will be canceled. A decision about after-school activities and athletics will be announced by noon. Students in Pre-K through Grade 12 will participate in a Remote Learning Day. Details about students' Remote Learning Day schedule will be sent to families from their child's school.

CLOSURES DUE TO COLD WEATHER

School will be canceled if the National Weather Service forecast for 6 a.m. on the following morning shows an air temperature of below -25 degrees Fahrenheit OR a wind chill of below -35 degrees Fahrenheit.

If possible, a decision about whether to hold school in-person will be made the evening before, or by 5:30 a.m. the day of. There will be no communication (phone call or email) from the district if the decision to hold school goes on as scheduled.

Late Start

When expected cold temperatures and potentially dangerous road conditions affect the school day, District 191 schools will start 2 hours later than usual. Buses will pick students up two hours later than their usual time. Parents can track their students' buses using the MyStop app. Learn more at www.isd191.org/mystop.

The 2-hour delay typically means (but subject to change):

No AM classes — Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE)
No AM classes — Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE)
No AM classes — VPK/4-year-old preschool or pre-kindergarten
No AM childcare — Project KIDS
Ready to Grow! Ready to Learn preschool childcare begins at 8:30 a.m.

Early Release

When expected cold temperatures and potentially dangerous road conditions affect the school day, District 191 schools will close 2 hours earlier. All schools will dismiss 2 hours earlier than normal and buses will bring students home 2 hours earlier than normal.

This 2-hour early release typically means (but subject to change):

No PM classes — Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE)
No PM classes —Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE)
No PM classes —Half-day preschool
No PM programs — Community Education classes and after-school activities (any exceptions will be noted on the District website at www.isd191.org)

Communicating weather-related messages to families

When severe weather affects the school day, District 191 does everything it can to keep families in the know.

Website — Pop-up alerts will be posted on the District website at www.isd191.org and all school websites
Notification phone call — A phone call will be delivered to all phone numbers on file for all students
Email — An email announcement will be delivered to all email addresses on file for all students
Text messaging — A text message will be sent to parents who opt in (send "Y" or "YES" to 67587 to receive text messages)
Social Media — Announcements will be posted to District 191 Facebook and Twitter accounts
Local television & radio — Information will be relayed through local television and radio stations

In the event of all emergencies, including those not due to weather, student safety is always the district's top priority. The district will do everything it can to communicate with the families of the students involved in an accurate and timely manner, and through the channels (phone, email, text, social media, etc.) it deems appropriate depending on the circumstances of the emergency.
