COVID-19 Update for March 27 - Distance learning details

On Monday, March 30, Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 will begin distance learning for students. 

During the first week of distance learning (March 30 - April 3), the district will follow its Flexible Learning Plan, which was originally intended for weather-related closures. This week will focus on relationship-building between teachers and students and continuing previous lessons, not introducing new concepts. 

Families with students in grades Pre-K through 5 can download resources for the week of Flexible Learning Days. Secondary teachers will publish lessons by 9 a.m. using Schoology, the district’s online learning system, so students can access courses and complete assigned work.

Distance Learning from April 6-May 4

How instruction will work

Teachers will be expected to provide new lessons and activities each week. Student instruction days will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday. Students will be expected to check in each of those days as directed by the teacher. Teachers will be available by email, phone or online 8:15AM - 11:30AM and 1:15PM - 4:00PM on those days. Wednesdays will be a time for students to work on assignments, independent practice in math or reading, or projects. Teachers will be attending grade level and content areas meetings and professional development on Wednesdays, and will be able to respond to students and parents the next day. 

Attendance

The Minnesota Department of Education requires that attendance be taken daily. In order to be considered “in attendance,” students are expected to interact and respond to their teachers every day. This may include any of the following: 

  • Online form, question, survey
  • Chat participation (directly with teacher or as part of a teacher facilitated group chat)
  • Email
  • Voicemail
  • Video meeting

Attendance is not based on assignment completion. Families will be contacted if students do not complete the check ins.

Being successful

Ensuring the success of Distance Learning takes a partnership of students, teachers, and caregivers. During this transition to Distance Learning, it is not the expectation that families and caregivers will be homeschooling their children. The classroom teachers are expected to deliver instruction that fits each grade level of students.

You can help your child be successful:

  1. Establish routines and expectations
  2. Create a space for your child to “be at school.”
  3. Keep connected to your children’s teachers
  4. Help your child take responsibility for their learning
  5. Encourage physical activity and/or exercise
  6. Remain mindful of your child’s stress or worry
  7. Monitor how much time your child is spending online
