Middle, high school students returning to hybrid starting March 1

District 191 middle and high school students will return to a Hybrid learning model on March 1, according to a plan announced today by Superintendent Dr. Theresa Battle.

The decision to change learning models for middle and high school students is still closely tied to how many new cases of COVID-19 there are in the community. As of Feb. 11, the rate of new cases per 10,000 residents was 31.2 in Dakota County and 30.9 in Scott County, but both county health departments have said they expect the numbers to continue to decline.

“Our secondary schools did a great job with hybrid learning in the fall, and now that the prevalence of COVID in our community has lowered, we’re ready to welcome students back into school,” Battle said.

Transition Days

To allow staff time to prepare to welcome students back into schools, there will be no school for grades 6-12 on Feb. 22-23. This includes students in Virtual Academy.

Conferences will continue as planned, with no school for all students Feb. 24-26.

Health & Safety Measures

  • Masks will still be required for students in school and while riding the bus.
  • Staff members must wear a mask AND face shield while in school buildings.
  • The social distancing requirements for students and staff will remain at 6 feet.
  • Students will be placed in cohorts so that daily attendance will remain below 50% of capacity.

Cohorts & transportation

  • All teacher and schedule assignments for second semester were made with a return to Hybrid in mind, so there should be very little need for changes, if any.
  • The Hybrid learning model will be the same as it was in the fall, with students being placed in either “A” or “B” cohort and attending school in person two days per week, and participating in distance learning the other three days.
  • Cohort information will be sent out soon to students who have chosen Hybrid/In-Person learning.
  • Transportation information will be sent to families via postcard and available on ParentVUE.
