Open Facilities

In 2019, after a detailed study of the district's facilities and how they were being used, District 191 closed three school buildings. Since then, the District 191 School Board has approved a plan for managing those open facilities, and district administration provides regular updates about the process.

What happens with the proceeds from the sale of property?

When the district sells a property, it's required first to pay off any existing debt associated with that property.

If there are proceeds remaining after the debt is paid off, state law only allows those funds to be used toward capital projects (facilities and related).

District 191 has requested an exemption to this law that would allow proceeds of the sale after paying off any remaining debt to e transferred to the district's general fund. This would give the district more flexibility to use the money for other expenses, including programs, staffing and services.

What's prosed for the Metcalf Middle School site?

District 191 has a purchase agreement with a development company called Enclave. The developer has presented plans for a new residential neighborhood consisting of for-sale townhomes, for-sale single-level twin homes, a senior cooperative (ownership) and a market-rate rental apartment.

Plans may change and no official application has been submitted to the city of Eagan as of December 2022.
