Volunteers honored with 2025 Coskran Volunteer Awards in District 191

Eight extraordinary volunteers were chosen to receive the 2025 John Coskran Volunteer Awards in Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191.
“The District 191 community has always had a strong culture of service to others, and these outstanding volunteers are representative of that culture and of our District’s core value of creating a caring community,” said Superintendent Dr. Theresa Battle. “I’m so proud of them and thankful for all they do for our students, staff and families.”
Winners were honored during the Board of Education meeting on Thursday, June 12.
Recipients of the 2025 John Coskran Volunteer Award are:
Students:
- Miaoting Fang, a senior at Burnsville High School, is a longtime volunteer for BrainPower in a Backpack and other food distribution projects. She’s volunteered more than 330 hours to various programs during her high school career, and is a member of the school’s Youth Service Advisory Council.
- Gustavo Garcia Guzman, a senior at Burnsville High School, has dedicated numerous hours to supporting academic improvement of his peers, especially those students who are learning English, through in-class support and after-school tutoring.
- William Nurminen, a senior at Burnsville High School, is a longtime volunteer for BrainPower in a Backpack, serving as a team captain, ensuring accurate meal delivery counts each week. He’s also a member of the BHS National Honor Society and BHS Link Crew, supporting peers through tutoring and helping new students feel welcome and comfortable at the school.
- Feven Tesfaye, a junior at Burnsville High School, has given more than 700 hours of service during her high school career, including leading the organization of three successful blood drives. She has served as a member of the National Youth Leadership Council Youth Advisory, helping to plan a national virtual summit, and is a BHS Link Crew leader and peer tutor.
- Alison Inamagua Urgiles, a sophomore at Burnsville High School, has dedicated more than 200 hours of volunteering in several schools during this school year, including at Vista View Elementary where she supports kindergarten and English Learner students in small groups every Friday. She also participated in the recent service learning trip with BHS students to the Dominican Republic.
Community:
- Brad Gluth gives hundreds of hours of his time as a volunteer coach with the Burnsville High School Cross Country and Track & Field teams, as well as summer running programs, supporting student athletes from beginners to state meet participants.
- Shouma Banerjee is a volunteer with the District 191 Adult Basic Education (ABE) program, providing guidance, tutoring and encouragement to students working to pass their GED exams or pass the ParaPraxis test to become highly qualified educational assistants.
Parents:
- Tiffany Rupp provides support in numerous areas across District 191, including as a classroom, lunchroom and safety patrol volunteer at Harriet Bishop Elementary and also with the district’s food security programs. Along with helping deliver meals for BrainPower in a Backpack, she prepares bags of produce for Tuesday Pantry and supports the Bowls for BrainPower fundraiser in multiple ways.
This is the 23nd year of the awards, which are named in honor of John Coskran, a long-time advocate for volunteerism who served 34 years at Catholic Charities and retired as associate director in 1993. Mr. Coskran, who also served as a member of the District 191 Board of Education, died in 2014.
