Eight of fourteen seniors who plan to become teachers took part in a signing ceremony on May 7 at Burnsville High School.
The ceremony, similar to those where high school senior athletes sign letters of intent regarding where they will play college sports, honors students who are committed to pursuing a teaching career.
Teachers Matt Deutsch and Andrea Parent, advisors of the Future Teachers of America (FTA) club, were on hand to welcome parents, staff and students to the event.
Wendy Drugge, president of the Burnsville Education Association, also spoke at the ceremony, encouraging students to lean on the Burnsville community for support as they navigate their journey in the education field.
This year’s future teacher signees include:
- Ayesha Abdi — Normandale Community College, Bloomington
- Stephanie Aguirre — Minnesota State University, Mankato
- Christopher Alvarez — Augsburg University, St. Paul
- Tyrone Bush — Winona State University, Winona
- Jadyn Clem — University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire
- Kimberly A. Delgadillo Curiel — University of Minnesota, Twin Cities
- Gustavo Gerardo García Guzmán — University of Minnesota, Twin Cities
- Ashton Gwilt-Slavik — Winona State University, Winona
- Lillie Hanto — University of North Dakota, Grand Forks
- Avery Krumwiede — Iowa State University, Ames
- Dixie Lytle — University of Minnesota, Twin Cities

Through a partnership with Metropolitan State University, the Education Pathway at Burnsville High School helps jumpstart students’ journey into the education field. Seniors can take two education courses and earn six college credits without leaving the building.
The approach aligns with District 191’s Pathways model, which helps students think about and prepare for their futures by providing real-world opportunities right in the school, many of which lead to professional certifications or college credit.
