Quiz Bowl team earns seventh championship title with SSC victory

Burnsville High School (BHS) Quiz Bowl Team A captured its seventh South Suburban Conference (SSC) Championship on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

Four teams (A, B, C, D) participated in the tournament and all went undefeated for a combined record of 20-0.

The varsity Team A includes seniors Matt and Josh Trussell, junior Anthony Cubias, sophomore Sam Morgan and freshman Xavier Sachse. Xavier won a conference medal as the second overall scorer in the tournament. Matt finished sixth overall, Anthony seventh, Sam thirteenth and Josh twenty-second.

“I have been on the quiz bowl team for the last eight years,” said Matt Trussell. “While I have experienced the highest of highs and lowest of lows, this last SSC win was special for me. We weren’t expecting to win, so doing so felt especially sweet, and we qualified for the Atlanta national championship in May!”

“Our success is largely due to our coach, Les Moffitt. He always encourages us, even when we lose, and congratulates us when we win. He also gives us the worst look when we give a poor answer,” he jokingly added. “I am excited to travel to Atlanta to compete one last time with Burnsville Quiz Bowl before I graduate!”

Burnsville B, C and D teams, which included seniors Henry Buchanan, Collin Boyum and Andrew Cronin, sophomores Kat Nguyen and Cale Cross, Eagle Ridge eighth-grader Charlie Morgan and Nicollet sixth-grader Burke Moffitt, all tied for the JV Championship. Henry led the JV division in scoring while Collin finished second, Andrew finished third, and eighth-grader Emery Gehrke from Nicollet finished fourth.

“The future is bright,” said Les Moffitt, BHS teacher and team coach. “Three of the individuals on the championship team will be returning next year and two of them are underclassmen.’

The teams will compete at the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) Minnesota State Championship, which will be held on March 9 at Eden Prairie High School, as well as at the High School National Championship Tournament in Atlanta in May.
