Nicollet teams place second at national chess tournament 

The Nicollet Middle School chess team competed at the National Middle School chess tournament May 16-17 in Austin, Texas.

Nicollet placed second as a team in the U900, U700 and U1600 blitz divisions. 

Sixth-grader Thiago Briceno was the school’s top finisher, going undefeated in the U1100 division on his way to being crowned national champion. Hamza Kedir placed second at U900 and Gracin Mathews placed fifth in the U1600 blitz tournament and 15th in the U1400 section. 

Other top 20 finishers were Ivan Boyce (10th), Elijah Rosas (13th), Marshall Averitt (16th) and Mike Krasnakutski (20th). 

“Congratulations to all 19 students that represented Nicollet and Minnesota in Texas for your fine performance,” coach Brian Ribnick said.
