Safio Mursal
On Thursday, Jan. 9, District 191 School Board member Safio Mursal announced her resignation from the Board, effective Jan. 7.
Mursal was elected in 2022 with her term beginning in January 2023.
“I am so very grateful for the opportunity to serve our community and contribute to the educational development of our students.” Mursal wrote in her resignation letter. “During my time on the board, I have appreciated the collaborative efforts we’ve undertaken to enhance our schools and support our educators and students. It has been a rewarding experience, and I am proud of the progress we have made together.”
Members of the Board and Superintendent Dr. Theresa Battle thanked Mursal for her service to the district and contributions to the Board, including the past year as chair of the Policy Review Committee.
As required by state law, the Board will appoint a replacement. Because the vacancy occurred with less than two years before the end of Mural’s term, no special election is required and the person the Board appoints will serve for the remainder of the term, which ends in January 2027.
Board members discussed the appointment process, which will include taking applications, during a work session following the Jan. 9 meeting. They expect to finalize the process and timeline during a special meeting on Jan. 17. More information about how and when to apply will be shared following that meeting.
