Pam Voigt, District 191 Community Education’s BrainPower in a Backpack coordinator, has been named a Civic Learning Week All Star.
Civil Learning Week (CLW) is March 10-14 and hosted annually by iCivics, highlighting the importance of civic education in sustaining and strengthening constitutional democracy in the United States.
Voigt was selected for her dedication and commitment to supporting and leading BrainPower in a BackPack and Bowls for BrainPower at Burnsville High School.
Under Voigt’s leadership, high school students and community volunteers assemble hunger-relief packages through the following programs:
- BrainPower in a BackPack — a weekend hunger relief program available for all District 191 students, providing weekend food packages to families struggling with food insecurity.
- 191 Community Pantry — a family, grocery bag style food distribution available to all community members on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at Diamondhead Education Center. Each grocery bag has 10-15 nonperishable items designed for a family of four, including a box of assorted fresh fruits and vegetables when available. The Pantry is open to the public.
- 191 Fresh Produce Distribution — a free program that provides a box of assorted fresh fruits and vegetables to any community member. Distribution is held the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at Diamondhead Education Center from July through October.
Voigt also organizes and manages Bowls for BrainPower, the annual fundraiser supporting BrainPower in a Backpack. Funded entirely by donations, BrainPower currently sends food home to more than 750 children each week during the school year.
