Bus Ambassadors: Building connections between drivers, students and schools

Across District 191, an increasing number of schools are implementing Bus Ambassador programs to support students in having successful bus rides to and from school, while helping them safely get on and off the bus each day.

The Bus Ambassador program began last year. Initially piloted at Eagle Ridge Middle School and Sky Oaks Elementary, the program assigns teachers or staff members to specific buses to serve as a connection between drivers, students and the school.

The program was developed collaboratively by school principals and the district’s transportation department to improve the overall bus experience. By having a designated staff member to interact with students in real time, drivers gain valuable support, and students benefit from consistent guidance and another positive relationship with a school staff member.

"The role of a bus ambassador is to be a support for the driver and help students have a safe ride to and from school,” Sky Oaks teacher Melanie Bryant said. “I see my role as Bus Ambassador as positive because I am able to build relationships and connections with students who I do not have in my classroom."

The initiative has already yielded significant results. At Sky Oaks and other schools who started the program this year, including Rahn Elementary, bus drivers are reporting a noticeable improvement in student behavior and conduct reports have decreased dramatically. Drivers also appreciate having a school representative to collaborate with on concerns, which fosters a stronger sense of teamwork and support.

“It is going really well,” Rahn Principal Brad Robb said. “The staff members connect with the bus drivers on a daily basis and remind students about expectations. The amount of bus referrals for behavior has dropped off significantly. It has been a game-changer.”

Transportation Supervisor John O’Laughlin says the program’s success lies in its ability to address issues before they escalate.

“Drivers have responded positively to the help. They’re reporting drastic improvements on providing a safe and positive experience over previous years,” O’Laughlin said.

By strengthening relationships and creating a consistent structure for addressing concerns, the Bus Ambassador program ensures that buses are not just a means of transportation but also a space where students feel safe and supported.
