Burnsville High School honored as ‘exemplary model’ for assisting students in the college application process

Burnsville High School received the American College Application Campaign’s (ACAC) 2020 School of Excellence Award for its demonstrated commitment to student success and for serving as an exemplary model for Minnesota Goes to College, a coalition to ensure today’s students are prepared for tomorrow’s jobs.

Only one high school per state, per year receives this honor.

The ACAC works to increase the number of first-generation college students and students from low-income families pursuing a college degree or other higher education credential or degree.

“Many students find the college-going process stressful, overwhelming, or confusing and don't know how to ask for help. Because of high schools like Burnsville High School, students receive the support they need to break down the steps for applying to college and are set on a path of success,” said Lisa King, director of ACAC. “We know that this was an especially challenging year for students, and we are grateful to educators like you who innovated and found ways to virtually or safely in-person support students as they navigated the complex application process.”

“We are honored to be recognized for our efforts to encourage our first-generation college students and students from low-income families to apply to college or pursue other types of post-secondary credentials,” said Marcia Sexton, BHS college and career specialist. “Our goal has always been to have our students graduate with a plan, and part of that plan is making college accessible to every student.”
