Burnsville High School senior Scott Froebe has been named a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist.
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic scholarship competition for recognition and university scholarships. The program is managed by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Since 1955, the NMSC has recognized students based on their test scores, academics and extracurricular achievements.
Froebe is among the less than one percent of high school seniors nationally who qualify as semifinalists. Finalists will be announced in February.
“I am glad to have received this honor,” Froebe said. “It's always nice to be recognized for hard work that may go unnoticed. It is great to have something to show my dedication besides just grades and numbers on an application.”
Froebe has achieved a 4.0 grade point average while taking Advanced Placement classes, College in the Schools classes through Inver Hills Community College and Post Secondary Enrollment Option courses through Normandale Community College. Other awards he’s received include AP Scholar with Distinction, the Junior Book Award and the National Hispanic Recognition Program.
At BHS, he’s played soccer for four years and is an accomplished Olympic Weightlifter, winning one state championship, finishing runner-up once and competing in the USAW National Championships.
“I would like to thank my teachers for encouraging me to challenge myself with college level coursework and getting involved in extracurricular activities that have helped me academically and socially succeed throughout high school,” Froebe said. “Additionally, getting involved with sports and taking rigorous courses has not only prepared me for college but made me a well-rounded individual overall.”
After high school, Froebe plans to attend a four-year university and major in computer science. He’s interested in a career in software or cybersecurity.
