Metcalf Junior High STEM Magnet Program
Thank you for your interest in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Magnet program at Metcalf Junior High. Metcalf offers a STEM option for seventh, 8th and 9th grade students with an emphasis on engineering in a collaborative, rigorous curriculum.
What's different about a STEM school?
Students are immersed in an interactive, project-based curriculum. They develop investigative skills and use technologies to identify problems and generate solutions. Students apply knowledge and skills to real world situations and experiences, as well as interacting with professionals in STEM related fields.
How does it work at Metcalf?
STEM content is integrated into all subject areas with teacher collaboration and coordination. Our expanded STEM team includes Language Arts and Social Studies along with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
There are unique comprehensive capstone projects during each semester at each grade level in the program.
At Metcalf, the rigorous STEM themes are:
- Seventh Grade: Virtual Vehicles and Magic Machines
- Eighth Grade: Rockin' Research and Cryptology Quest
- Ninth Grade: Engineering and the Environment
How will STEM at Metcalf benefit my child?
Students within the STEM program use the same Autodesk Inventor software engineers use on the job. Through high level applications of software and the use of technology, students are better prepared for future career success with transferable skills to be globally competitive.
Is your student one who learns by manipulating materials into models and projects? The technology and engineering class incorporates many design process activities along with engineering software, all relating and reinforcing to the other STEM areas. Maybe 3D modeling on the computer is an interest. Maybe flight and space life. Is the environment or robots another?
Why do cats see so well in the dark? What causes the phases of the moon? Why does your body get thrown forward when riding in a car that stops suddenly? All of these questions will be answered in STEM science where your student will participate in a hands-on, inquiry based course of learning.
Does your child like to read? The language arts curriculum has related readings that are grade level appropriate to enrich and enhance student knowledge and skills related to vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar, written expression and communication.
Maybe math is a strong point for your child. Most students within the STEM program are moving through math at an advanced pace. Sometimes they are a year or two ahead in their mathematics. Students will be placed within math classes based upon testing data to be at their most successful level.
Social Studies complements our program with seventh grade as an introduction to world studies through travel and culture studies. Eighth grade focuses on the world today through current events as well as times beginning with the Industrial Revolution to World War II and after. Understanding cause and effect, critical thinking skills, grade level readings and application of knowledge are inherent to the social studies program as well.
