When students arrived for the 2016-17 school year, they found changes throughout Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 thanks to voter approval of the two Vision One91 referendum questions on Feb. 24, 2015.
The goal of Vision One91 is to redesign the district to meet the needs of today’s learners and ensure the district’s mission of “Each Student. Future Ready. Community Strong.” Among the changes were realigning grades so elementary schools serve grades k-5, transforming junior highs into middle schools with grades 6-8, and moving 9th grade to Burnsville High School. Remodeling took place at some schools, especially at Burnsville High School. At William Byrne Elementary, aging portable classrooms were removed and replaced with an addition. Security improvements were also made.
The Vision One91 K-5 Elementary Design Team focused their attention on how we can effectively make changes to our programming to support learning for all at high levels. The team was divided into 5 different work groups:
- Transitions/Climate & Culture;
- Academic Core & Schedules;
- Early Childhood Programming;
- Service Delivery Model; and
- Communication and Outreach.
Beginning in the 2016-17 school year, all of District 191's three middle schools offered an exciting magnet concept. The meant taking the best of the magnet programs we had in all three junior highs, and sharing it in all three new middle schools with grades 6-8. Burnsville High School
The Pathways model at Burnsville High School represents a sweeping change in how we encourage students to think about and plan for their high school experiences. A Pathway is basically a series of classes that students can take to help them follow their interests and prepare for the future. By looking at the Pathway that includes a career interest of theirs, students will find classes that make sense for them. Learn about Pathways.
In all District 191 schools and in age-appropriate ways, students use personal learning devices that provide access to high-quality learning resources and give them the ability to create digital and multimedia projects to showcase their learning. The district also provides ongoing training and support for teachers, while ensuring districtwide infrastructure is safe, secure and reliable. Learn about technology use.
The construction that took place before the start of the 2016-17 school year represented the most visible aspect of Vision One91. That construction involved:
- Aggressive timeline to complete building bond projects and have facilities ready to welcome students for the 2016-17 school year.
- Sale of bonds at March and April board meetings, taking advantage of good interest rates.
- Work with architects (and BHS alumni) Mark Hayes and Eric Anderson of ATS&R (architectural firm) to finalize details.
- Construction began summer 2015 and continued to August 2016.
