Burnsville High School has nominated juniors Talori Dunsworth and Robbie Wedan as the 2017 ExCEL Award (Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership) recipients.
Sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL), this unique recognition program is designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, who show leadership qualities, and who work voluntarily in their community.
Every member school of the MSHSL is invited to nominate one girl and one boy for the ExCEL Award. Nominees must meet the following criteria:
be a junior in high school
make satisfactory progress toward graduation
participate in a MSHSL fine arts and/or athletic activity
hold a leadership position(s) in their school
work voluntarily in their community.
Talori is involved in National Honor Society, Young Life, student council, hockey and lacrosse. She has been a captain for the girls’ lacrosse team the last two years. Talori is also an active volunteer in the community, working with “Safe Hands Rescue,” a non-profit that helps find permanent homes for dogs; the Open Door Pantry; Feed My Starving Children; and Ebenezer Ridges Care Center.
Robbie Wedan is also a National Honor Society and student council member, and he participates in hockey and tennis. His volunteer experience includes working with Feed My Starving Children, participating in Relay for Life and Polar Plunge, and helping with BHS musicals and other extracurricular events.
Both juniors plan on attending college after high school. Talori hopes to attend Northwestern University in Illinois and plans on becoming a dermatologist. Robbie would like to attend either the University of Minnesota or Michigan Tech and major in engineering.
"Both Robbie and Talori have displayed amazing leadership skills in the many athletic endeavors, activities and volunteering opportunities they have participated in," says Jeff Marshall, Athletics and Activities Director at Burnsville High School. “They are both wonderful representations of well-rounded students who are both very humble and well-grounded.”
The BHS students will move on to the next level for consideration. The state ExCEL Award recipients will be selected by an independent panel of judges from schools throughout Minnesota. They will be recognized on KSTC-TV (Channel 45) during the broadcasts of the 2017 winter tournaments.
This is the 21st year that the Minnesota State High School League has sponsored the ExCEL Award.
