BHS students will provide tech support, gain real-world skills

About 25 Burnsville High School students got a jump start in using their new Chromebooks so they can assist their classmates before and throughout the school year.

BHS students work with Best Buy Geek Squad members as they unpack their new Chromebooks.

Members of the BHS IT Explorations class were the first students to receive their Chromebooks. They'll be helping to provide IT support to their fellow students at the high school.

The group of students will work side-by-side with professionals to learn and develop the skills of a help desk technician as part of a purchase agreement between Best Buy and Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191. Students will acquire troubleshooting skills, configure operating systems, provide user support and increase their technical expertise. They will be a wonderful resource for their classmates.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to gain skills and expertise in technology support, customer service, and business practices in the IT world,” said Rachel Gorton, the district’s coordinator of instructional technology. “This will be real-world learning that will provide experiences and expertise they can use immediately and build on for their future.”

The students, in grades 9-12, are in an IT Exploration class taught by Cindy Drahos and will learn about technology education and career opportunities. They will experience several units of study including GamifyIT, office productivity, computer systems, software and application development (coding), business analytics (BiziPop) and information security.

Also, they will be able to earn digital badges because Burnsville High School is one of 200 schools that are part of a Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) grant for the Mouse Squad Certification Badge Program. Badges are a type of certification indicating an accomplishment, skill or competency within the technology area. The badges become an online record of work and qualifications that is transferable, allowing a student to present them to a place of employment or educational institution.
