District 191 is proud to offer band programs at all 10 of our elementary schools. Learning and playing and instrument, both individually and as part of a group, is a tremendous opportunity for young learners. The benefits of music education are myriad and well documented.
About the program
Band is available for students in 5th grade. Students receive individual or small group lessons once each week during the school day, and rehearse with the entire school band once each week either after or before school. There are two concerts each year, generally in January and May.
Students can choose to play any of the following instruments, though there may be some limitations based on popularity and musical needs for the overall sound of the band.
Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Sax, Trumpet, French horn, Trombone, Baritone horn, Tuba and Percussion.
How does my child join?
The school's band director will take time to test the musical ability of all 4th grade students during the month of May. Each student interested in beginning a band instrument is individually tested to seek out the best combination of interest, ease of sound production and necessary physical capabilities for certain instruments. Parents are invited to come in to a meeting where test scores are shared with them, our school program is outlined and costs involved in obtaining an instrument are covered.
