Burnsville-Eagan-Savage offers a district-wide English Language (EL) program to meet the needs of our students who are English Learners. The program provides English language development in the four domains of speaking, listening, reading, and writing and prepares students to be successful in the academic mainstream classroom.
EL service in our elementary schools is provided through a variety of strategies including pullout, push-in and/or co-teaching. EL schedules are coordinated with the classroom teacher and building schedules so that students do not miss important instructional time. We believe that focused English language development instruction in speaking, listening, reading, and writing at the elementary level is important for students to gain the skills needed so they are academically successful in the English-speaking classroom and can effectively communicate and interact with their English-speaking peers.
Pullout - students meet with their EL teacher outside the mainstream classroom
Push-In - EL teachers work with students in the mainstream classroom
Co-Teaching - EL and Classroom teachers work together to plan and deliver instruction to all students
EL service in our secondary schools is provided within the student's regular class schedule. One or more class periods each day are designated as EL classes, depending on the language needs of the student. These classes are specifically designed to meet the learning needs of each student and to ensure students are ready for post-secondary and real-world opportunities.
