Yana Khetiya practiced an hour a day for a couple of weeks to prepare for the 33rd annual Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 Spelling Bee on Dec. 5.
It paid off! The Eagle Ridge Middle School eighth grader emerged as the champion from among the 28 best spellers from around the district and took home the big trophy. The event went about 15 rounds with “competition" as the winning word.

Gavin Shaner, a fifth-grader at Harriet Bishop Elementary in Savage, placed third among nearly 1,800 students from throughout the Midwest who took the ACT Explore exam through the Northwestern University’s Midwest Academic Talent Search (NUMATS) program.
Television and radio personality Jason Matheson stepped into the shoes of a food service worker at Harriet Bishop Elementary School in Savage recently to help prepare and serve meals to students.
Matheson is the host of Jason & Alexis in the Morning on MyTalk 107.1 and also of The Jason Show at KMSP-TV. On his program, he does “fish out of water” segments where is out of his element.
The Harriet Bishop Service Club, which organizes students to engage in community service at the school and throughout the community, will be honored for its work at a major, statewide celebration of community service.

The City of Savage will celebrate its second annual Service Day Saturday on April 16 with volunteer opportunities, family fun and community partnerships.
Teams from Metcalf Junior High in Burnsville and Harriet Bishop Elementary in Savage won state titles at the Minnesota State Scholastic Chess Championship, held March 19-20.
