Statement in response to budget-related petition

We are aware that a student petition is being circulated on behalf of the educational assistants (level 3 out of 4 levels in the district) at Burnsville High School.

To meet our students’ needs, the proposal is to reduce educational assistants and to increase deans, social workers and an associate principal at Burnsville High School as part of the budget for the next school year.

Safety/security and supporting the needs of our students are a primary concern. Our proposed new model of support would put resources toward wrap-around services that can meet more of our students’ socio-emotional needs.

Nothing has been finalized yet for the 2018-19 school year budget, and no vote will be taken by the Board of Education on April 12 (as incorrectly stated in the petition).

The superintendent and board of education are examining expenditures across the district as part of the annual process for developing the budget. Budget adjustments will take place to bring the district’s expenditures in line with revenue to be fiscally responsible.
