The Harriet Bishop Elementary primary chess team finished fourth out of 45 teams in the annual Minnesota School Chess Association state tournament held at Metcalf Middle School on April 22. One member of the team, first grader Aakash Thurairajalingam, took third place out of 138 players in the primary (K-3) section, finishing with six wins and one loss.
Fourth place is believed to be the highest finish in the state tournament by a Harriet Bishop primary team. Team members were Askash (6 wins), Presley Martchev (4.5 wins), Ashwin Thurairajalingam (4 wins) and Ashwini Chandrashekaran (3 wins).
The school’s elementary team (grades 4-6) placed 18th in the state out of 56 teams competing at the elementary section tournament April 14. The team was short a player at the tournament because of the weekend’s blizzard. Team members were Aditya Chandrashekaran (4.5 wins), Gavin Wetterlin (4 wins) and Joseph Ong (4 wins).
Congratulations to all seven team members who held the banner high for Harriet Bishop in this year’s state tournaments, coach Don Picard, and to parents, for braving severe weather to let their children compete.
