Gavin Shaner, a fifth-grader at Harriet Bishop Elementary in Savage, placed third among nearly 1,800 students from throughout the Midwest who took the ACT Explore exam through the Northwestern University’s Midwest Academic Talent Search (NUMATS) program.
He achieved a perfect score on the math portion of the exam and was the top scorer among Minnesota students. The exam is typically taken by 8th graders, making his accomplishment even more impressive.
At Harriet Bishop, Gavin is involved in Service Club and says math is probably his favorite subject.
He was honored at an awards ceremony at Northwestern University’s campus in Chicago this summer.
