The Harriet Bishop Service Club, which organizes students to engage in community service at the school and throughout the community, will be honored for its work at a major, statewide celebration of community service.
Shrey Pothini, who started the club as a third grader in 2013, along with three other students and club adviser Erin Huber will attend and be recognized at WE Day Minnesota’s “Evening of Inspiration” on Monday, Sept. 19 and again at the Educational Partnership Breakfast on the morning of WE Day, Sept. 20.
WE Day is a celebration of youth making a difference in their local and global communities, highlighted by a concert-like event featuring world-renowned performers and inspirational speakers. More than 10,000 students are expected to attend this year’s event at Xcel Energy Center.
Since its inception, the Harriet Bishop Service Club has performed dozens of community service projects, including sending educational supplies to schools in Guatemala, organizing students and staff to donate hair, creating tied fleece blankets for the Minnesota Animal Humane Society, and helping to organize Service Day Saturday in Savage. The club has received several awards and, thanks to a grant from State Farm, its model has been expanded to several other District 191 elementary schools.
