Burnsville High school juniors are recipients of the 2016 ExCEL Award

Krista Holmstrom and Luke Senta are recipients of the 2016 ExCEL Award (Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership). Sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL), this unique recognition program is designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, who show leadership qualities, and who work voluntarily in their community.

Every member school of the MSHSL is invited to nominate one girl and one boy for the ExCEL Award. Nominees must meet the following criteria:

  • be a junior in high school
  • make satisfactory progress toward graduation
  • participate in a MSHSL fine arts and/or athletic activity
  • hold a leadership position(s) in their school
  • work voluntarily in their community.

Krista has been involved in National Honor Society, science club, cross-country, Nordic skiing, track and field, and band. She also has been an active volunteer in the community, working with “Be the Star You Are,” a non-profit that empowers others through literacy, and Apple Valley Medical Center. Krista regularly volunteers at church and various athletic meets.

Lucas has also been involved in National Honor Society and was part of the Burnsville High School “Green Team.” He participates in hockey, baseball and tennis. His volunteer experience includes working with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Feed My Starving Children and Mission Outpost.

Both juniors plan on attending college after high school. Krista plans on majoring in engineering while Lucas aims for biomedical engineering.

The ExCEL Award recipients are selected by an independent panel of judges from schools throughout Minnesota. Each recipient is recognized on KSTC-TV (Channel 45) during the broadcasts of the 2016 winter tournaments.

This is the 20th year that the Minnesota State High School League has sponsored the ExCEL Award.
