District 191 voters approve two funding requests for Vision One91

Voters approved two school funding requests on Feb. 24 in Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 with 4,793 ballots cast.

According to unofficial results, Question 1 (called "Buildings for Learning") received 3,014 "yes" votes (63%) to 1779 "no" votes (37%). This will provide $65 million to re-align grades districtwide to K-5, 6-8 and 9-12; create a comprehensive four-year high school experience, add classrooms and an activity center to Burnsville High School; remodel some elementary schools; expand early childhood spaces; improve school security; and relocate and repurpose other spaces for greater efficiency.

Question 2 (called "Technology for Classrooms") received 3,031 "yes" votes (63%) and 1,762 "no" votes (37%). This creates a new funding stream of approximately $2.5 million per year for 10 years to equip classrooms with technology resources that allow teachers and students to individualize learning and expand curriculum, as well as provide ongoing training and support for teachers and provide a robust, reliable and secure infrastructure to support technology use.

“We are grateful that the community has supported Vision One91 so we can move ahead on grade realignment and technology improvements to benefit our students and their learning,” said Superintendent Joe Gothard. “We worked with the community and staff to develop this shared vision, and can now begin to implement it for the 2016-17 school year.”

“This positive vote shows that community members understood both the importance and urgency associated with preparing our students to be real-world-ready when they graduate from our schools,” said Board of Education Chair Bob VandenBoom.

Vote totals are unofficial until the Board of Education meets to canvass the election at 7 a.m. on March 5, at the Administrative Service Center, 100 River Ridge Court, Burnsville.
