District 191 spelling bee will be Dec. 1

The best spellers in Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 will participate in the 31st annual district spelling championship at 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 1, in the Mraz Center for the Performing Arts at Burnsville High School.

The 31 participants will be the building co-champions from 13 schools in District 191 along with two students representing St. John the Baptist school in Savage. The event is open to the public.

The spelling representatives from Nicollet Junior High are eighth-graders Tyler Schommer, Aradhana Menon and Rachel Dylla. The Metcalf Junior High representatives are eighth-grader Simon Ault and seventh graders Ilhan Adan and Chance Persons. The Eagle Ridge Junior High representatives are seventh-graders Meagan Haase, Brandon Vi and Anastasia Williams. The champion spellers from St. John the Baptist are eighth-graders Joe Brunner and Lucas Lesser.

The building co-champions from the 10 elementary schools in District 191 are: sixth-grader Eloisa Carrasco and fifth-grader Abshir Ahmed of Sky Oaks; sixth-graders Omar Ahmed and Kaitlyn Palacios of Vista View; fifth-graders Anas Mohamed and Bailey Wishart of Sioux Trail; sixth-graders Jurusalem Gebrekristos and Hollyann Marquez of Rahn; sixth-graders Chloe Jones and Hannah Herman of Edward Neill;  sixth-graders Michael Angara and Erika Leeman of Gideon Pond; fifth- grader Anthony Yip and sixth-grader Joshua Holden from Marion W. Savage; sixth-graders Owen Geegan and Evan Beattie of Hidden Valley; fifth-grader Zena Martin and sixth-grader Yana Khetiya of Harriet Bishop, and fifth-graders Ellie Scheldberg and Greta Kneisl of William Byrne.

Students in grades five through eight were eligible to compete for the building championships.

Jennifer Bohr, a sixth-grade teacher at Hidden Valley Elementary School, is coordinating the district's spelling bee activities.
