Winter sports at Nicollet JH

There are numerous opportunities for junior high students to participate in winter sports, including at Nicollet and as part of teams at Burnsville High School.

Boys’ 9A and 9B Basketball: Boys’ 9A basketball is open to any interested 9th grade boy. The team will conduct tryouts at the high school and will consist of a limited number of players. Any 9th grade boy who does not make the 9A team is encouraged/welcome to try-out for the 9B team at their respective junior high. Boys’ 9B Basketball is open to any 7th-9th grade boys who would like to try out for 9B basketball, an extension of the high school program. Each junior high will field its own 9B team and will compete against other 9B high school teams. Practices will be held at Nicollet with games taking place at both the high school and the junior highs. 9th grade students are encouraged to try out for the 9A team that is housed at the high school. These tryouts will take place starting Monday, November 3rd. 9th grade students who don’t make the 9A team and all 7th/8th grade students can try-out for the Nicollet 9B team at Nicollet starting on Wednesday, November 5th. Girls’ Basketball is open to any and all interested 7-9th grade girls. The team will offer 4 levels this year – varsity, JV, B Squad, and 9A. Depending on the number who tryout, cuts may have to be made. All practices and games will be held at BHS. Dance Team is open to all 7-8th grade girls at Nicollet. The start date will be Monday, October 27th. Girls should meet in the cafeteria at Nicollet for practice. Girls should come prepared to dance by wearing shorts, t-shirts, and tennis shoes. Please contact head varsity coach, Anna Abbe at aabbe@burnsville.k12.mn.us if you have any questions.

Boys’ Hockey is open to any interested 9th grade boy. The team will conduct tryouts with players potentially being cut due to limitations in squad size. Practices and games are held at the Burnsville Ice Center. Please check the BHS Boys’ Hockey website or contact Janne Kivihalme, head coach, at jjkivihalme@mchsi.com for more information.

Alpine Skiing is open to any and all interested 7-9th grade girls or boys. Practices and meets are held at Buck Hill Ski Area. Nordic Skiing is open to any and all interested 7-9th grade boys or girls. Practices are held at Terrace Oaks Park in Burnsville. Please check the BHS Nordic Ski website for more information or contact Chris Harvey, head coach, at charvey@barr.com.

Boys’ Swimming is open to any and all interested 7-9th grade boys at Burnsville High School. Practices and meets are held at the BHS pool. Wrestling is open to any and all interested 7-8th grade students at Nicollet. 9th grade students will participate on the BHS team with practices and competitions being held at BHS. 7th and 8th grade students will start on Monday, November 17th at Nicollet in the auxiliary gym. 9th grade students will start Monday, November 17th at the BHS wrestling gym.
